They do have the buffer - which I'm ordering. NUMRICH doesn't have that tiny plate - I'll have to fab one up. After another shot or so I realized it was coming from the action! Yep, that was the buffer! It was totally destroyed at that point and the force of 22mag recoil had sheared an ear off of a small retainer plate at the back of the main spring. After getting the bolt unlocked, I had taken it to a range and while shooting it I thought someone was throwing "pink rice" in the air. I didn't realize it had a buffer until I took a good look at the parts list. I had purchased the gun in the early or mid '90's and hadn't shot it for years. I suspect the double was caused by the buffer weakening by age. The shadows from trees were getting long and the scope was dark. I was using a cheap, 2 1/2 power X 28 scope late in the afternoon.
The Fed 50 gr JHP was good for 3/4" vertical by 1 1/2" horizontal on a breezy, side-wind day at 100 yards rapid fire off the side of a pickup bed on a rolled up jacket for a rest. It and the Federal 45gr FMJ are often used on Maui for head shooting Axis deer - a local pest on Maui that has literally bankrupted some small farmers (we are allowed to take one a day, every day with a regular hunting license - landowners in ag areas are allowed to get more by permit). My most accurate load, the one I was shooting at the time it "doubled", is the Federal 50gr JHP. I finally figured out to bang the butt on a hard floor while depressing the hold-back lever. It took over a year of head scratching to get the bolt to unlatch from the hold-back! So maybe it isn't THAT over designed after all? The bore was clear - so at least nothing lodged in the barrel. the first shell was bent nearly in half and the second split. The previous shell was ejecting while the next shell went off.
